Capable of full frame coverage that will resolve to 4K resolutions, a new XEEN 135mm T2.2 lens joins a family of high end cinema primes with similar features as much more expensive lenses at a significant savings in cost. Offered by Korean optics company Samyang as a targeted line of cinema lenses for filmmaking and video, the XEEN 135mm is the newest model in a small but building family alongside 14mm T3.1, 24mm T1.5, 35mm T1.5, 50mm T1.5 and 85mm T1.5 models. The XEEN 135mm will be available in several mounts, including Canon EF, Nikon F, PL mount, Micro Four Thirds MFT and Sony E-mount.

The new XEEN 135mm T2.2 starts off Samyang’s “Summer Blockbusters” schedule of weekly lens announcementsAt an average of $2,500 each, Samyang is able to make the XEEN lenses so comparatively inexpensive because the lenses are manual focus without any internal servos or motors. Cinematographers rarely use autofocus, however, and in fact cinema lenses differ from typical still lenses largely for that reason. Cine lenses are housed in huge, oversized barrels for ease of rotation and more leeway for changing focus as a subject moves through a scene. The apertures are “declicked”, as well, which allows for a much smoother and silent transition when changing depth of field during a recording. Many of them include large focus scale and other lens marking to easily see them from behind or to the side of a camera. The XEEN models include these T-stop and focus scales on both sides of the lens in imperial and metric.

The XEEN 135mm T2.2 from parent company Samyang, who also produces the Rokinon 135mm T2.2 lensRather than an f-stop, cine lenses also generally offer a T-stop rating. The T-stop is a much more accurate measurement of the complete amount of illumination passing through the aperture to the sensor rather than the dimensions of the aperture, which is how f-stops in the world of still photography are calculated. With 114mm front size, the front element on each XEEN lens has “X-Coating Technology”, a multi-layer coating for flare reduction as well as heightened color transmission over other Samyang and Rokinon models. (Samyang produces Rokinon lenses, too.)
The XEEN 135mm is the first lens to be released by Samyang in their “Samyang Blockbuster” summer of teased lens announcements. The company says that it will be releasing five new lenses concurrently over the course of the next five weeks, so expect four more lenses to be heading your way. For those looking for even better pricing, there is also a similar Rokinon 135mm T2.2 cine lens with similar specs at only $599 street. It has only a 7-blade aperture, however, while the XEEN 135mm has an 11-blade aperture. An 11-blade aperture is going to have a much more pleasing bokeh, the out-of-focus area, as spectral highlights will appear more round over the rather hexagonal look you will see in backgrounds when a lens has minimal aperture blades.
